On
the 13th August, 1922
the Circolo was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The parish
priest of the church conducted the ceremony. This kick started the
good relations between the club and the church. The frame of the
Sacred Heart costed Lm1.25 and was donated by Fillipin Agius who two
years later was elected President of the club.
Pietru Farrugia was
made secretary and Antonio Abdilla became the treasurer.
It was also
during this year that the statue of St. Mary was to be carried in
procession by professed catholic members and who were fellows of a
guild, such as that of the Holy Sacrament. The first eight bearers
were led by Nazzareno Agius. In
1927 the club was facing some difficulties because the landlord of
the premises of the Circolo demanded the keys of the premises so
that it could be sold. Consequently, the committee
decided to sell the movables in the house by auction. The auction
was presided by Lorenzo Porsella Flores.
The money from the sale, at least
part of it, was dedicated to St. Mary and a pair of golden
sandals was bought for our Lady. The appointed curator of
these movables were Antonio Abdilla and Guzeppi Grima. After
few months, about mid 1929, a new premises was found at
49, St. Mary’s street. This belonged to Peppinu Dimech, the
ex-president of the Circolo. By now the name of the club had
been changed to Circolo Assumption of Our Lady. The first
president of the new club was Fillipu Agius, Giovanni Agius was
the secretary and Carmelo Tanti the treasurer. The members were
Nazzareno Agius, Nazzareno Gravina, Guzeppi Abdilla and Carmelo
Grima. |
