Band:
History
During the general meeting held in
1934, the members of the official committee were gently asked to
enroll bandsmen with a view of forming the band of the Maria Assunta
Club. The response was encouraging and thirty bandsmen were chosen
among whom Guzeppi Abdilla, Carmelo Farrugia and Salv Mizzi along
with many others
The head of this
venture was Guzeppi Abdilla, who had a vast
knowledge of the theory and practice of music.
As a tutor he taught these young men the basic
principles of music. The club therefore bought
drums, and cymbals. The other members of the
band bought their own instruments. Mro. Guzeppi
Spiteri was chosen as the first band master.
Though he lived in Zejtun, he was born in
Ghaxaq, and was proud of it. Guze Abdilla was
chosen as his assistant. The inauguration
display of the band took place on the 14th
August, 1935 during the morning Te Deum of the
feast. |

In the evening, the
first official programme was staged on the
bandstand in the square opposite the parish
church. The band also performed for the
very first time outside Ghaxaq. This event took place at Qormi,
during the feast of St. George. Pietru Mannara was
entrusted with the job of collecting money for the band. Money was
also to be collected for
the construction of the bandstand complete with seats, flags, and
lights. This was achieved through the efforts of Antonio Abdilla,
Carmelo Farrugia and many others. The bandstand was inaugurated on
Palm Sunday in 1936 where funeral marches were played. |

Another innovation was the boost to
lay the theatre which was very popular those days. Every Sunday was
a special day dedicated to plays, sometimes comic and other
times serious. For 20 years, till 1956, such occasions were a success also
due to the continuous efforts of Sunny Spiteri, Guzeppi Schembri,
and Zaren Gravina. But with the coming of the cinemas people
preferred to watch films rather than plays. Due to loss of
finances, the members of the club proposed the holding of fairs,
shows and other games which were usually held in the school yard.
There was music, raffles and a lot of prizes to be won. A jazz band
was also set up in order to create the joyful atmosphere. This jazz
band, which proved to be very popular, was under the direction of Domnic Spiteri. |
